DES MOINES, IOWA
If you look at the end of this house it is just like the one that you probably drew as a child, five simple lines, a chimney and some dark squares for windows. This childhood form is extruded in plywood and covered with a gray corrugated metal skin through the entire length of the house except where an 8 foot wide section has been pushed out of the extrusion and colored as bright as a child’s red ball. The entire lower portion of the red wall spins on axis and opens to the inside of the plywood box with slabs of painted plaster covering the plywood where art hangs. An industrial steel and aluminum stair zigzags from the wine cellar on the lower level through the main level living spaces to the bedrooms and studies above. Medicine Woman is perched high above the stair on her own platform. Art is everywhere and lit with museum quality lighting.
